Club notes — March 23

Daughters of the American Revolution

The El Portal chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met March 8. Regent Vicky Stratton called the meeting to order and led opening rituals. After the President General’s message, members read the National Defense, Constitutional, Indian and Conservation minutes. Officers gave reports followed by the business meeting.

Carol Nash reported that two of our essay contest winners, Dane Ferguson, seventh-grader from Elida and Holly Chandler, sixth-grader from Floyd also won the state competition in Albuquerque. Jessie Strauch said that Tessa Nall from Floyd was presented with the Good Citizen award by El Portal and also won the state award.

Vicky Stratton presented our program about George Mason, considered one of the founding fathers of the United States. He represented Virginia at the Constitutional convention but refused to sign the Constitution for not containing state rights to balance federal powers, added later as the Bill of Rights.
