COMMERCE, Texas — Sophomore guard Zenobia Winbush had five 3-pointers and a career-high 19 points while junior guard Ashlee Johnson added 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting with four assists and four steals, both off the bench, as Texas A&M-Commerce used a 17-0 run to erase a 10-point deficit en route to an 84-65 Lone Star Conference women’s victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Wednesday night.
Junior guard Devin Oliver added 12 points and 10 rebounds while senior forward Breanna Harris also chipped in 12 points as the Lions (5-18, 4-9 LSC) handed ENMU its eighth consecutive loss and pulled into a tie with the Zias (6-16, 4-9) for sixth place in the LSC. Both teams are one-half game ahead of Cameron (4-10, 12-12) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (4-10, 9-15) in the battle for the final three spots in next month’s LSC tournament at Allen, Texas.
ENMU put five players in double figures, led by junior forward Tori Tucker’s double-double with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jordyn Cooper added 11 points, while junior posts Jasmine Johnson and Nelsha Peterson and sophomore guard Jaylyn Cooper all finished with 10 points.
Except for three ties, the Zias led the entire first half, but Commerce pulled even 36-36 with the final 10 points of the opening stanza, tying it on point guard Alize Pegue’s jumper just before the buzzer, and took the lead for good with the first seven points after play resumed.
Jordyn Cooper’s 3-pointer and 2-pointer pulled the Zias to 43-41 with 15:45 to go before the Lions ran off the next eight points.
ENMU got to 60-54 on a basket by Peterson at the 10:20 mark and was still within 66-59 after a Tucker 3 with 8:19 to go. But the Zias managed only two field goals and six points the rest of the way, and went scoreless over the final four minutes.
The Zias shot just 30 percent in the second half, and went 3-for-17 from long range after making 6-of-10 in the opening stanza. The Lions, meantime, shot 48 percent for the game on 32-of-66.
