Hot start boosts Cameron past Zias

LAWTON, Okla. — Reserve guard Ali Brown scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Cameron shot a blistering 7-of-10 from 3-point range in the first half en route to a 76-63 Lone Star Conference women’s basketball victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Wednesday night.

Brown went 4-of-5 from 3-point range for the Aggies (11-11,3-9 LSC), who finished 11-of-22 from long range.

Meantime, senior forward Christina Caddy added 15 points and seven rebounds and junior guard Jazzmine Robinson chipped in 14 points and seven boards for the Aggies. All three players were in double figures by halftime as the Aggies rode 60 percent field goal shooting (18-of-30) to a 47-28 margin.

Sophomore guard Jaylyn Cooper shot 6-of-12 from the field and 2-of-4 from long range en route to a career-best 14 points for the Zias (6-14, 4-7), who dropped their sixth in a row. Junior point guard Lakeeyscia Griffin, who had a team-high five assists, and junior post Jasmine Johnson each finished with 10 points.

Cameron took an 8-0 in the first 90 seconds, getting a 3-pointer from Robinson and a 3-point play from senior guard Chelsea Stamp. The Zias twice pulled to within a basket midway through the half, but the Aggies took command by outscoring ENMU 23-7 the rest of the stanza.

Cameron led by as much as 29 points midway through the second half before the Zias finished the contest on a 23-7 run.

Cameron shot 52 percent from the field for the game. The Zias, who converted just 9-of-32 first-half attempts, shot 50 percent the rest of the way to finish at 38 percent.
