The flu season is here! Flu activity in the United States typically peaks in January and February. The 27th Special Operations Medical Group has flu shots and flu mist available for eligible patients (active duty, dependents, base contractors and retirees) until supplies run out. More than 98 percent of Air Commandos on base have received the vaccine and are maximally protected.

This year’s prevalent flu strain is the H1N1 strain associated with Avian influenza, which we were very concerned about two years ago. Avian flu is different in that it affects the adult population (18-65 years of age) more than any other flu virus. The vaccine offers protection against several flu strains by sparking your immune system to be ready to fight these viruses.

In addition to the flu vaccination, which remains the most effective preventive measure, everyday precautions may be taken to maintain wellness throughout flu season. Simple, yet effective methods to minimize interpersonal germ spreading include keeping a healthy distance from sick individuals, washing hands frequently and staying home when feeling under the weather.

It’s not too late! It’s free! All you have to do is walk in! For your convenience, the Immunizations Clinic is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All are encouraged to receive the vaccine now as it will still afford you and your family protection during this year’s flu season.
