Fishing report — Dec. 5

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes — Closed for the season.

Cimarron River — Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake on Monday was .82 cfs. Keep this water on your list for spring. Low water conditions this time of year make for some tough fishing.

Clayton Lake — Closed for the season.

Conchas Lake — The shallow and steep boat ramps on the north side of the lake are now open along with the Cove campground ramp. Fishing pressure was very light and fishing was described as slow for all species.

Coyote Creek — We had no reports from anglers. The creek is iced over in some spots.

Eagle Rock Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake — With ice forming along the bank, the boat ramp has been closed and the lake is currently closed to ice fishing. For updated information, contact the State Park office at 575-377-1594

Hopewell Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lagunitas Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice — We had no reports from anglers this week. There is a thin layer of ice forming around the edges.

Lake Maloya — Fishing was fair using salmon peach, rainbow and green Power Bait and an assortment of spinners for rainbow trout.

Los Pinos — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lakes — Closed for the season.

Monastery Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. The lake is closed to ice fishing.

Morphy Lake — Closed for the season.

Nutrias Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Pecos River — Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 39 cfs. The Mora and Jamie Koch fishing and recreation areas have reopened. The Bert Clancy and Terrero campgrounds remain closed. Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, egg pattern flies, copper John Barrs and small wooly buggers for a mixed bag of brown and rainbow trout.

Red River — Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 42 cfs. Fishing below the hatchery was rated as good to excellent by anglers using bead-head prince nymphs, copper John Barrs, poundmeisters, egg patterns and salmon eggs for a mixed bag of browns and rainbows. Anglers having the best luck were using double nymph rigs.

Rio Grande — Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 344 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using streamers for trout. The fish were few and far between but large and healthy. Fishing for northern pike was slow but there were a few taken by anglers using large black and rainbow-colored streamers. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 13 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora — Water flow near Terrero on Monday was 14 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo — Water flow near Penasco on Monday was 8.4 cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

Santa Barbara — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds — We had no reports from anglers.

Springer Lake — We had no reports from anglers.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Ute Lake — The surface temp as of Monday was in the low 50s. Fishing remained slow for all species with just a few walleye and white bass reported by anglers using slab spoons, jig and minnow and blade baits. Fishing pressure was very light.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 348 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using copper John Barrs, bead-head pheasant tails, small streamers and salmon eggs.

Albuquerque Area Drains — Fishing was good using small copper John Barrs, bead-head pheasant tails, Power Bait and salmon eggs. Anglers using salmon eggs did best drifting single eggs on a small hook under a float. We received good reports from the Belen, Corrales, Albuquerque and Albuquerque South drains.

Bluewater Lake — Fishing was slow for all species Fishing pressure was very light. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 290 cfs and 193 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using Power Bait, Rapalas, streamers, wooly buggers, copper John Barrs and spinners. Fishing below Abiquiu was good using copper John Barrs, wooly buggers, bead-head hares ears, salmon eggs and Panther Martins. We had no reports on kokanee snagging on the portion of the river from El Vado Lake to the west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area. The season runs through December.

Cochiti Lake — The main boat ramp is now open. The Tetilla Peak area and the day use area are closed for the season but other areas are open for bank fishing. Fishing was slow for all species.

El Vado Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was extremely light.

Fenton Lake — A layer of ice has formed on the lake and it is closed to fishing and will remain closed until ice-out in the spring. .

Heron Lake — The only boat ramp open is the primitive ramp in the Ridge Rock area. Boaters are able to launch but advised to use caution. Launching with four-wheel-drive vehicles is recommended. Kokanee snagging was reported as slow but there were a few taken near the dam and in the Piedra Cove area. Fishing for trout in the same areas was fair for anglers using Power Bait and roe sacs.

Jackson Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters — The Jemez River was flowing at 28 cfs on Monday. Trout fishing on the lower section of the Jemez was fair to good using salmon eggs, hares ears and copper John Barrs. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla was slow with very light pressure. We had no reports from the Rio Guadalupe, East Fork or the San Antonio. The Valles Caldera has been closed to fishing for the winter but should be back up and running next spring.

Laguna del Campo — Closed for the season.

Lake Farmington — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.

San Gregorio — We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River — Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 250 cfs. Fishing through the Quality Waters was good using small dry midge patterns as hatches were lasting throughout the daylight hours. Anglers also did well using small bead-head pheasant tails and zebra midges. Tyler Briggs and Evan Mitchell fished the Texas Hole over the weekend and did very well using size 24 and 26 black midges, red and brown San Juan worms and black wooly buggers. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using salmon eggs, Power Bait, streamers and spinners.

Santa Cruz Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Seven Springs Brood Pond — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach — Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and Pistol Petes at the Central and Youth Ponds. Trout fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was fair to good using bunny leeches and green and olive wooly buggers. We stopped by here Sunday morning and observed a few hook ups and misses. Will definitely take the fly rod with us on our next visit.

Southwest

Bear Canyon — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing for trout was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes under a bubble. A few trout were also taken on spinners. We had no reports on other species.

Caballo Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers for walleye and catfish. A few catfish and carp were caught by anglers using liver. All catches were reported by anglers fishing from the bank. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte — Fishing was generally slow but we did hear of a few white bass caught by anglers using slab spoons and a few largemouth bass caught on jigs. The surface water temp ranged from the low to mid 50s. The Marina del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site boat ramps are now open. The Monticello ramp remains closed due to low water conditions.

Escondida Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gila River — Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 7 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond — Fishing was good using Power Bait for trout.

Lake Roberts — A construction project to improve the dam has begun and falling lake levels may make it increasingly difficult to fish. The project is expected to continue into next summer.

Percha Dam — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande — Trout fishing below Elephant Butte was slow to fair using salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond — Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Southeast

Bataan Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 20 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs and copper John Barrs.

Blue Hole Park Pond — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bonito Lake — Closed.

Bosque Redondo — Trout fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs, garlic scented Power Bait and worms.

Bottomless Lakes — Trout fishing at the Devil’s Inkwell was fair for anglers using Z Rays, Super Dupers, small Kastmasters and chartreuse Power Bait.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake — Trout fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

El Rito Creek — Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs.

Eunice Lake — Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, rainbow and salmon peach Power Bait and worms.

Greene Acres Lake — Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Green Meadow Lake — Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Grindstone Reservoir — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jal Lake — Trout fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Lake Van — Fishing was fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes under a bubble and spinners for trout.

Oasis Park Lake — Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and Pistol Petes.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 19 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 7.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake — Fishing was slow for all species and fishing pressure was light.

Sumner Lake — Fishing pressure was extremely light and fishing was slow for all species. The Alamo boat ramp and the main boat ramp are the only ramps open.
