Greyhounds push win streak to five

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team needed a second-half rally to keep its win streak alive.

Senior forward Eishu Kanemitsu scored the game-winning goal and added an assist as the Greyhounds beat Lubbock Christian 2-1 Thursday at the ENMU Soccer Field to push their win streak to five games.

Kanemitsu scored in the 66th minute as he tapped the ball across the goal line after a cross from senior midfielder Julian Roberts got past the outstretched arms of the LCU keeper. Also getting credited with an assist on the goal was Hernandez.

It was a school-record eighth assist this season for Roberts.

Freshman midfielder Jose Hernandez tied the game for the Greyhounds (7-3-1) six minutes into the second half with a header past the right post.

Nick Gorrie scored his the first goal of the game for LCU (3-3-1) in the 22nd minute, beating the Hounds freshman goalkeeper Severin Niessen on his near side.

Niessen made two saves.

Eastern attempted 24 shots in the game. It was the fifth time this season and third straight contest that they had at least 20 shot attempts.

Women: ENMU 2, LCU 1

Junior forward Alysia Carrasco scored the game-winning goal off a free kick 13 minutes into the second half to lift Eastern New Mexico University to a 2-1 victory Thursday in a non-conference match at ENMU Soccer Field.

It was the first time in six home matches for the Zias (3-4-2) that the game didn’t go into overtime.

The Zias struck first, with juniuor Renee Romero firing a long pass down the sideline, which freshman Jenna Sievers fired into the far right corner of the LCU goal midway through the first half.

Brooke Wendl tied the game for LCU (3-5) five minutes later.

Romero also assisted on Carrasco’s game-winner.

Fabienne Wilson and Alyxandra Ortiz combined for six saves for the Zias.
