Capitan 7, Fort Sumner 6

• Records: Fort Sumner 1-2, Capitan 2-1.

• Difference: The Tigers were able to stop a 2-point conversion by Fort Sumner with less than two minutes remaining in the game. Junior Jorome Tompkins then got the Foxes’ sixth fumble recovery with about a minute left at the Capitan 36, but Fort Sumner couldn’t advance the ball.

• Difference-makers: Fort Sumner, Nik Sanchez caught two passes for 65 yards from Hunter Sparks, including a 33-yard scoring play to bring the Foxes close. Capitan, Thomas Fields rushed 20 times for 116 yards and scored on a 45-yard run midway through the first quarter.

• Go figure: 16 — Combined fumbles for the two teams on a wet field. Fort Sumner had five and lost none, while the Tigers recovered five of their 11 fumbles.

Farwell 49, Hale Center 27

• Records: Hale Center 1-2, Farwell 3-0

• Difference: The Steers jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back, steadily pulling away from there.

• Difference-makers: Junior quarterback Chase Mitchell threw four touchdown passes, all to sophomore WR Angel Graxiola covering 24, 9, 8 and 33 yards. Senior RB Daniel Kirkland had the other TDs on runs of 7, 2 and 25 yards. Andrew Michaelski went 7-for-7 on PAT kicks for the Steers, who outgained the Owls 374-264.

• Of note: This game was similarly high-scoring to last year’s contest at Hale Center, only that one went double overtime with the Steers pulling out a 41-40 victory.

Hondo 56, Floyd 0

• Records: Hondo 3-0, Floyd 0-2

• Difference: The defending 6-man state champion Eagles simply had too much for the young, depth-thin Broncos. The game ended at halftime on the state’s 50-point lead rule.

• Quotable: “We got better as the game went on. There was definitely improvement from play to play. Hondo is just a quality team.” — Broncos coach Steve Faust.

• Next up: The Broncos play the first of four road games on Sept. 27, traveling to Lake Arthur.

Levelland 20, Muleshoe 14

• Records: Muleshoe 1-2, Levelland 2-1

• Difference: The Lobos turned the game around in the second half, erasing a 14-0 deficit with 20 unanswered points, including the winning touchdown and 2-point conversion with 15 seconds left.

• Difference-makers: Muleshoe, senior WRs Matt Barron and Austin Ross combined for 11 catches for 150 yards, including a scoring catch by Barron in the second quarter. The Mules’ other TD came on a 2-yard run by sophomore RB Josh Lopez in the first quarter. But the Lobos’ shut down Muleshoe on the ground, limiting the Mules to a minus-54 yards (including sacks) on 16 attempts.
