Fishing report - June 6

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Cabresto Lake — Fishing was good using copper John Barrs, wooly buggers, bead-head hares ears and spinners for trout.

Charette Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River — Water flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 30 cfs. Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, Cimarron specials, brassies, Cimarron worms, stimulators, salmon eggs and worms. Anglers using dry dropper combinations did best. Stone flies are starting to put in an appearance. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair to good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes.

Clayton Lake — Fishing was good using Power Bait and silver spoons for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was very good using grubs, jigs, tubes, crank baits and jerk baits for small smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using worms and small grubs for bluegill. Fishing was slow to fair using liver and cut bait for catfish. A few walleye were caught by anglers using crank baits, grubs and sassy shad. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 60s.

Coyote Creek — Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs in the beaver pond areas.

Eagle Rock Lake — Fishing was very good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms, Pistol Petes and a wide variety of flies for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake — The boat ramps are open and the boat docks are in place. Fishing for northern pike was spotty at best with just a few caught by anglers using spoons, spinners and clousers. Fishing was good trolling Panther Martins, Arnies and Cripplures tipped with corn for a mixed bag of kokanee and trout. Anglers did best using light tackle. Fishing was very good using worms for perch.

Hopewell Lake — Trout fishing was very good again this past week. Anglers did well using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms and copper John Barrs.

Lake Alice — Fishing was fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout.

Lake Maloya — Fishing was excellent using Pistol Petes, garlic scented Power Bait, corn, Panther Martins, marshmallows and salmon eggs for trout. In addition to the normal trout stocking, the lake was stocked with over 750 pounds of trophy size browns and rainbows. Los Pinos — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake — Fishing was slow.

Monastery Lake — The area is currently closed due to a wildfire.

Morphy Lake — Fishing was good using Power Bait, marshmallows, cheese, corn and salmon eggs.

Pecos River — Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 46 cfs. Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, prince nymphs, stimulators, worms, nightcrawlers and salmon eggs. Most of the area above the town of Pecos is temporarily closed due to a large wildfire in the area. Fishing downstream through Villanueva has been slow.

Red River — Water flow near the hatchery Monday was 71 cfs. Trout fishing was good using copper John Barrs, poundmeisters, stimulators, spinners and nightcrawlers.

Rio Grande — Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 276 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters, attractor pattern dries, spinners and nightcrawlers for trout. Fishing for smallmouth bass was good using streamers, poppers and small jerk baits. Fishing for northern pike was slow.

Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 57 cfs. Fishing on the upper Hondo was good using elk hair caddis small attractor patterns for trout.

Rio Mora — Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 11 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo de Taos — Water flow near Taos was18 cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

Santa Barbara — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was fair using Power Bait, garlic cheese, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake — Fishing for bluegill was fair using worms and small grubs. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was fair to good using senkos, crawdads, worms, tubes and creature baits. A few were also taken on topwater lures and jerk baits. A large number of short bass were caught over the weekend. Fishing was fair to good using nightcrawler spinner rigs, crank baits and jigs tipped with nightcrawlers for walleye. Fishing was fair trolling crank baits for white bass. Kids had a great time catching carp. They were using corn. The surface water temp was in the high 60s.

Southeast

Bataan Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 3.4 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Trout fishing was slow.

Bonito Lake — Closed.

Bosque Redondo — Fishing was slow for all species.

Bottomless Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was fair using liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Rito Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake — Fishing was fair to good using liver, hot dogs, nightcrawlers and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was fair using nightcrawlers, liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Grindstone Reservoir — Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, worms, garlic cheese, salmon eggs, and Pistol Petes. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and nightcrawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Lake Van — Fishing was good using nightcrawlers, dough bait, blood bait and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing was fair using shrimp and liver for catfish. The best reports came from anglers fishing early and late in the day. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 67 cfs. Fishing was fair using chicken liver and worms for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Perch Lake — Fishing was slow.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow near Hollywood on Monday was 12 cfs. Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and a variety of size 14 to 18 bead-head nymphs.

Santa Rosa Lake — The lake has reopened to boating but the launch area is undeveloped and boating is restricted to no wake speed only. Fishing was very good using chicken liver, cut bait, blood bait and worms for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using grubs and minnows for crappie. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was fair to good using cut bait, liver, nightcrawlers and worms for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, sassy shad, grubs and minnows for walleye. David Hooten, Maison Hooten and Jessie Van Hooshier of Hobbs had a great time here Saturday night. The caught three limits of walleye, several large white bass and two good size catfish. They were fishing from the rocky bank and using minnows and nightcrawlers. The Violation Canyon boat ramp remains open at this time and will remain open as long as lake levels permit.
