Cats victimized by perfect game

CARLSBAD — Junior left-hander Caleb Prentiss got plenty of support from his teammates Friday night. He didn't need much.

Prentiss tossed a six-inning perfect game as Carlsbad beat Clovis High 10-0 in the first game of a District 4-5A baseball doubleheader. The Cavemen also won the nightcap 14-1, clinching the district title.

Clovis (8-16, 1-5 district) managed seven hits in Game 2, but didn't score until Jordan Holguin's single plated Brody Edwards in the top of the fifth. That game was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Wildcats coach Shane Leatherwood said a fly ball was misplayed into a double in a two-run first in the opener, and helped get the Cavemen (21-4, 6-2) off to a fast start.

In the second game, Clovis committed five errors in a six-run Carlsbad first.

"We still ended up making some plays," Leatherwood said. "We threw a couple of guys out from the outfield. We just didn't make all the plays we needed to."

Outfielder Michael Cordova had two outfield assists, one on a diving catch where he caught the Carlsbad runner off second for a double play.

Austin Edwards went 5-for-5 in the two games for Carlsbad while Roman Gonsalez drove in six runs in the nightcap with a first-inning grand slam and a two-run single in the fourth.
