Fishing report - Aug. 9

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Cabresto Lake: The lake and campground closed May 14 and will stay closed for about six months while the dam is being rebuilt.

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River: Trout fishing was good using BWOs, brassies, copper John Barrs, tricos, small gold Panther Martins, salmon eggs and worms. Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake as of Monday was 36 cfs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit lakes was fair using salmon eggs. A few trout were also taken on spinners fished above the grass lines.

Clayton Lake: Fishing for trout was slow to fair using Power Bait. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was very light. Due to low water conditions, only small boats, kayaks and canoes can be launched.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, spoons and grubs for white bass. Fishing was fair using top water lures, chigger craws, spinners baits and jigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. A few walleye were taken by anglers using spinner/minnow and spinner/night crawler combinations. Fishing was fair using liver and cut bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp ranged from the upper 70s to the low 80s.The steep north side boat ramp is open.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was good using tan elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good trolling Arnies and Panther Martins on light line for a mixed bag of kokanee and rainbow trout. A few were also taken by anglers trolling lead core at three colors. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing was fair using red and white Daredevles, Mepps spinners, Rapalas and swim baits for northern pike. Bank fishing was again best in the early morning and evening hours. Anglers using Power Bait, Pistol Petes under a bubble and worms caught a mixed bag of perch, kokanee and rainbow trout.

El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, elk hair caddis and copper John Barrs.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for rainbow trout up to 3 pounds.

Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was slow. A few fish were taken by anglers using Power Bait in the morning hours and dry flies in the evening.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was good using salmon peach Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 61 cfs. Trout fishing was good using tan and brown elk hair caddis, bead-head hares ears, prince nymphs, copper John Barrs, worms and salmon eggs.

Red River: Water flow below the hatchery was 42 cfs. Trout fishing above the hatchery was fair to good using copper John Barrs, elk hair caddis, Panther Martins and worms.

Rio Costilla: Trout fishing was very good using small hoppers, tan, brown and olive elk hair caddis and PMDs. Through the Valle Vidal the Costilla and Comanche Creek continued to fish well.

Rio Grande: The water flow Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 228 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Panther Martins, worms, bead-head hares ears, copper John Barrs and stimulators. The best trout fishing reports came from anglers fishing above the John Dunn Bridge. Fishing was slow to fair using tube jigs and wooly buggers for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Water flow near Valdez on Monday was 29 cfs. Prior to recent heavy rains, trout fishing was good using flashback pheasant tails and elk hair caddis in the evening hours. Expect the action to pick up again as the waters recede.

Santa Barbara: Trout fishing was slow.

Shuree Ponds: The water level on the ponds has been quite low and fishing was reported as slow.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Storrie Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, cheese and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, chigger craws, top water lures, jigs and swim baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using shrimp, minnows and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. Fishing for white bass was slow to fair using grubs, minnows and crank baits. A few walleye were taken by anglers using minnows and grubs. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp ranged from the high 70s to the low 80s.

Vallecitos Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Deadline for entryless Lakes: Fishing was slow for all species.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms and Pistol Petes. Ariana Chavez of Las Cruces caught her first fish here this past week. She caught a 12-inch rainbow trout while using Power Bait.

Jal Lake: Fishing was good using worms and dough baits for small catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Pecos River: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 68 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ruidoso River: Water flow at Hollywood on Monday was 2.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, nightcrawlers and chicken liver for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, sassy shad and crank baits for walleye. Fishing for black bass was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using top water lures, creature baits and jigs. We had no reports on other species. The boat ramp remains open. The surface water temp was in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, grubs and small plastic worms for smallmouth bass. The best reports came from anglers fishing the lower end of the lake. A few small walleye were taken by anglers using crank baits and tubes. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Animas River: As of Monday morning flow near Cedar Hill was 322 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair using swim baits, crank baits, jerk baits and spinners for tiger musky. Recommend releasing short fish as soon as possible to keep them healthy and a big catch for the future. On July 30, Gavin Matthews age 5 caught and released his first fish. It was a 20-inch tiger musky caught on a Rapala. On July 31 Jeremiah and Michael Baros fishing with their dad and from the bank caught and released their first tiger musky. They were 27 and 24 inches and were caught on bass lures. Fishing was slow to fair using stink bait for catfish. A few trout were taken by anglers trolling spinners. The surface water temp was in the mid to high 70s.

Canjilon Lakes: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes under a bubble.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 699 cfs and 732 cfs respectively. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs for rainbow trout and nightcrawlers for brown trout. The water was murky. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, grubs and spinners for white bass. A few largemouth bass were taken by anglers using top water lures and jigs. We had no reports on other species. The water surface temp was in the mid to high 70s.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The main park boat ramp is still open.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using worms, wooly buggers and Power Bait from the bank and Pistol Petes from boats. Anglers having the best luck were fishing the early morning hours and cloudy afternoons.

Heron Lake: Fishing was good using green, orange, pink and red spinners, double whammies and wedding rings tipped with white corn and trolled at a depth of 23 to 40 feet. Fishing from the bank was slow.

Jackson Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Jemez Waters: Water flow on the Jemez as of Monday morning was 11 cfs. Trout fishing on the Cebolla above and below Fenton Lake was fair using elk hair caddis, beetles, hoppers and worms. On the East Fork fishing was fair using elk hair caddis and salmon eggs. Best flies on the streams on the Valles Caldera were hoppers, elk hair caddis and PMDs. Best reports came from anglers fishing the upper reaches on the East Fork. The San Antonio was quite murky from recent heavy rains. Laguna del Campo: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, Panther Martins and Power Bait for trout. This is a special trout water open to anglers age 14 years or under, 65 years and older, handicapped anglers or up to 2 parents/guardians in direct supervision of a child or children age 14 years or younger who is fishing. This water was formerly known as Burn's Canyon Lake.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

McGaffey Lake: This body of water has dried up and will be removed from the report.

Navajo Lake: Hot spot for kokanee: Fishing was very good again this past week for anglers fishing for kokanee. They were trolling Arnies, Fish Catchers and Panther Martins tipped with corn behind beer cans or christmas trees at 35 to 43 feet. Fishing was fair using poppers, minnow imitation flies, tubes, top water lures and grubs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, creature baits and swim baits for northern pike. Back on July 29, Logan Keenom age 7 caught a 10-pound carp, a 2-pound catfish and a bluegill in a 20 minute period. He was using worms. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp ranged from 73 to 78 degrees on the main lake.

Ramah Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 807 cfs. Trout fishing in the Quality Waters was good using small midge patterns (to size 26) in the early morning hours and PMDs in the mid to late afternoon hours. Fishing through the bait waters was good using copper John Barrs, wooly buggers, egg patterns, jerk baits, salmon eggs and worms.

Santa Cruz Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: This water is open to fishing for youth under the age of 12 and

an excellent place to take youngsters and get them interested in fishing. The pond is well stocked to offer youngsters a great fishing experience.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was slow to fair using shrimp, stink bait and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Fishing at the Catch-and-Release Pond was slow.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was slow in the day time but great in the late night and early morning hours for catfish. Best baits were chicken liver and dough bait. We had no reports on other species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using minnows, grubs and spoons for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, crank baits and grubs for walleye. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to upper 70s.

Elephant Butte: Fishing was fair to good using slab spoons and white curly tail grubs for white bass. Anglers did best working main lake points and following the birds. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow but there were a few taken by anglers using top water lures and tubes. Fishing was good using worms, liver, cut bait and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Surface temps on the main lake were in the low to mid 80s.The Monticello and Dam Site boat ramps remain closed.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 51cfs. The main Gila, the East Fork and portions of the West Fork are open to fishing access. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was slow for all species.

Percha Dam: Fishing was good using minnows for a mix of white bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species.

Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 1,380 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte was slow to fair using stink bait and minnows for catfish. Fishing was fair using grubs and sassy shad for white bass. We had no reports from below Caballo.

Snow Lake: Some access roads have been cleared and the lake is now open. From Reserve you can access the lake by taking FR 141 to FR 128. From Beaverhead take FR 159 to FR 142. The water level is down but boat launching is still possible.
