Zia reaches tournament finals

CARLSBAD — The Clovis Zia All-Stars plated eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a close game and went on to beat host Carlsbad 11-3 on Wednesday night to reach the finals of the Junior Division state Little League tournament.

Zia faces Roswell Noon Optimists at 7 p.m. today in the finals of the double-elimination tournament. Noon Optimist handed Zia its only loss, an 11-4 decision on Sunday.

If Zia wins tonight, the teams will play a second championship game at 7 p.m. Friday. The tourney winner advances to regional competition slated for Aug. 3-10 at Albuquerque.

Zia led 3-2 going into the fifth inning. Ruben Madrid went six innings on the mound to get the win.
