Fishing report: July 27

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Cabresto Lake: The lake and campground closed May 14 and will stay closed for about six months while the dam is being rebuilt.

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cimarron River: Trout fishing was good using tricos, brassies, elk hair caddis, Cimarron specials, red copper John Barrs, small gold Panther Martins and worms. Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake as of Monday was 22 cfs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit lakes was fair using salmon eggs.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait for trout. We had no reports on other species. Fishing pressure was very light again this past week. Due to low water conditions, only small boats, kayaks and canoes can be launched.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, minnows, sassy shad and bottom bouncer night crawler combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair using crank baits, spinners, minnows and grubs for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using jerk baits, tubes, minnows, top water lures and worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using liver, shrimp and homemade dough baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 70s.The steep north side boat ramp is open.

Coyote Creek: We had no report from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good using worms from the bank and from anchored boats for perch. The little perch might drive you crazy but if you keep changing locations you will find good pan size fish. Fishing was fair trolling gold Panther Martins on light line just below the surface and behind christmas trees at 15 feet over 30 feet of water for kokanee and a few rainbows. Fishing was slow but there were a few northern pike taken by anglers using Panther Martins and Kastmasters.

El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, hoppers and worms.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was very good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for trout. A few fish were also taken on spinners.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms, small spinners, copper John Barrs and hoppers.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and elk hair caddis.

Morphy Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 35 cfs. Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis, orange stimulators, yellow humpys, royal wulffs, copper John Barrs, worms and salmon eggs. Ti Piper reported good fishing for the kids at Cowles Ponds. They were using spinners for trout and worms for catfish.

Red River: Water flow below the hatchery was 42 cfs. Trout fishing above the hatchery was good using copper John Barrs, orange stimulators, elk hair caddis and worms.

Rio Costilla: Trout fishing was good using hoppers, brown and olive elk hair caddis and yellow humpys. Through the Valle Vidal the Costilla and Comanche Creek continued to fish well.

Rio Grande: The water flow Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 228 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Panther Martins, worms, hoppers, bead head hares ears, copper John Barrs and orange and yellow stimulators. Fishing was fair using tube jigs for smallmouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Water flow near Valdez on Monday was 16 cfs. Trout fishing on the upper Hondo was good using parachute adams, hoppers and stimulators.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Storrie Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, cheese, corn and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake: Black bass fishing was best described as sporadic this past week A few anglers fishing tournaments weighed in small limits while most caught one or two. Best baits were tubes, top water lures, worms and crank baits. Fishing was good using chicken liver, dough baits and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was good using top water lures, crank baits and jigging spoons for white bass. Walleye fishing was fair using minnows, crank baits and bottom bouncer night crawler rigs. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.

Vallecitos Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using top water lures, tube jigs, night crawlers, minnows, jerk baits and crank baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits, bottom bouncer minnow and bottom bouncer night crawler combos for walleye. The best reports came from anglers fishing up river at night. They also reported catching good size catfish. The catfish were taken on shrimp, minnows and chicken liver. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 70s.

Animas River: As of Monday morning flow near Cedar Hill was 341cfs. Trout fishing was fair using streamers wooly buggers, San Juan worms, night crawlers and salmon eggs.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was good using shallow crank baits, jerk baits, swim baits and spinners for tiger musky. Recommend releasing short fish as soon as possible to keep them healthy and a big catch for the future. Anglers trolling Rapalas for tiger musky also reported catching several rainbow trout. Fishing was slow to fair using liver, shrimp and cut bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 70s.

Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 789 cfs and 1,070 cfs respectively. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair using salmon eggs for stocker rainbows. Chris Ortega of Albuquerque caught two good size kokanee salmon and a nice brown trout over the weekend. He was using his own custom made Pistol Pete. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow and the water was quite murky.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, minnows, grubs and spinners for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using top water lures, swim baits and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using shrimp, stink bait, hot dogs and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The water surface temps ranged from the high 60s to the low 70s.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The surface water temp was about 70 degrees.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs, worms, Pistol Petes and light colored Power Bait. The best reports came from anglers fishing cloudy, rainy afternoons.

Heron Lake: Fishing for kokanee was fair using Cripplures, double whammies and Z Rays tipped with white corn and trolled at a depth of 18 to 25 feet. Fishing from the bank was slow to fair using Power Bait, corn and salmon eggs for rainbow trout.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Water flow on the Jemez as of Monday morning was 22 cfs. Trout fishing on the Cebolla above and below Fenton Lake was good using wooly buggers and worms. On the East Fork fishing was fair using elk hair caddis, small hoppers and salmon eggs. We had no reports from the Rio Guadalupe or the main Jemez. Anglers fishing on the Valles Caldera reported murky water with recent rains on the San Antonio. The best fishing reports have come off Reach 4. Best flies for here and the East Fork have been small and medium size hoppers. If you are interested in fishing on the Valles Caldera go to htttp:www.vallescaldera.gov/comevisit/fish/index.aspx.

Laguna del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week. This is a special trout water open to anglers age 14 years or under, 65 years and older, handicapped anglers or up to 2 parents/guardians in direct supervision of a child or children age 14 years or younger who is fishing. This water was formerly known as Burn's Canyon Lake.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: Trout fishing was slow.

McGaffey Lake: This body of water has dried up and will be removed from the report.

Navajo Lake: Hot spot for kokanee: Fishing for kokanee was very good using red, orange and green Arnies, Z Rays and Panther Martins tipped with corn. Our best reports came from anglers fishing deep water (40 to 50 feet) in the Francis Canyon area. Fishing was fair using tubes, grubs, creature baits, jerk baits and clousers for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp ranged from 71 to 76 degrees on the main lake.

Ramah Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Gregorio Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using hoppers, Power Bait and salmon eggs.

San Juan: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 800 cfs. Trout fishing in the Quality Waters was good using size 22 black and olive midge pupas, size 18 and 20 parachute adams, streamers and large attractors. The pupas worked well in the morning hours with baetis dries and nymphs best in the afternoons. The big streamers and attractors worked best in the current flows. Fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using jerk baits, Power Bait, spinners, and wooly buggers.

Santa Cruz Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: This water is open to fishing for youth under the age of 12 and

an excellent place to take youngsters and get them interested in fishing. The pond is well stocked to offer youngsters a great fishing experience.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was very good using hot dogs, worms, stink bait and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Fishing at the Catch-and-Release Pond was slow.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, curly tail grubs, sassy shad and top water lures for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, minnows and bottom bouncer night crawler combinations for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, stink bait and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte: Fishing was good using crank baits, spinners, Flicker Shad, white and chrome Bombers, jerk baits and silver and gold Kastmasters for white bass. We received good reports from anglers fishing the Kettle Top and Long Point areas. Black bass fishing was slow but there were a few fish taken by anglers using top water lures, crank baits, swim baits, worms and salt craws. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and spinner night crawler combinations for walleye. Fishing was good using worms, stink baits, chicken liver and shrimp for catfish. Mike Sistok along with Martin Testorff and his son Samuel of Roswell caught and released about 100 catfish just north of the Kettle Top area. They were using worms. We had no reports on other species. Surface temps on the main lake were in the mid 70s and the water level is dropping. The Monticello and Dam Site boat ramps remain closed.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 87 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. For updated information regarding closures in the area call 575-533-6231.

Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and minnows for catfish.

Quemado Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using power bait and Pistol Petes. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 1,550 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte was slow to fair using small swim baits, grubs and sassy shad for a mixed bag of white bass and walleye. We had no reports from below Caballo.

Snow Lake: The Snow Lake/Dipping Vat Campground has been closed until further notice due to the Whitewater/Baldy Complex fire. For more information call 575-533-6231.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Bottomless Lakes: Fishing was slow for all species.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms and Pistol Petes.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow to fair using liver, stink bait and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Pecos River: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 85 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow.

Ruidoso River: Water flow at Hollywood on Monday was 2.5 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using minnows and chicken liver from the bank for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using minnow, grubs and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was slow for crappie but there were a few taken by anglers using minnows. We had no reports on other species. The boat ramp remains open. The surface water temp was in the low 70s.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The only boat ramp accessible at this time is the east side ramp.
