Clovis man found guilty of cocaine trafficking

A 26-year-old Clovis man was found guilty of trafficking cocaine Thursday by a Curry County jury, according to a press release from the district attorney's office.

Jaime Salazar faces a maximum of nine years in the Department of Corrections.

According to the release:

  • Police say on Feb. 16, 2011, Salazar was apprehended in the parking lot of a Mabry Drive hotel with more than $53,000 in cash, 312 grams of cocaine and two handguns in his truck.
  • District Judge Stephen Quinn denied a prosecutor's request and allowed Salazar to remain out on a $60,000 bond and at his home until his upcoming sentencing hearing — which should be set within the next three months.
  • Assistant District Attorney Jared Morris advised the court that while pending trial Salazar picked up new charges of trafficking methamphetamine in Portales, and the only way to ensure that Salazar was going to stop trafficking drugs and be present for a future sentencing hearing was to take him into immediate custody.
