Police: Shooting suspect sexually assaulted victim's girlfriend

A homicide suspect also forced a woman to perform a sexual act at gunpoint before he killed Shondel D. Lofton, Clovis Police Capt. Patrick Whitney said Friday.

Jimmy Reagan, 31, is being held at the Curry County Detention Center on an open count of murder. Police say he shot Lofton in the head Wednesday night.

Whitney said police believe Reagan chose his victims at random.

According to Whitney:

  • Reagan approached a woman on the back patio at 1701 N. Wheaton Road, said his vehicle was broken down, pulled a gun and demanded money.
  • The woman told Reagan she did not have money and he demanded a sexual act from her. Reagan held her at gunpoint and she complied.
  • During the sexual act, Reagan asked the woman who was in the house. The woman said her daughter (she was not) and her boyfriend were in the house.
  • Reagan kicked in the door and entered the house. The woman heard a gun shot, entered the house and saw her boyfriend was shot.
  • The woman looked around and did not see the suspect in the house. She ran out of the house to her vehicle and started to drive away.
  • Reagan pursued her, getting in front of her vehicle. The woman tried to run over Reagan with her vehicle and he moved out of the way.
  • He fired a shot at her vehicle, hitting a window.
  • The woman managed to escape and called law enforcement from another residence and reported her boyfriend had been shot.

Reagan, who police said kidnapped two women in a van at gunpoint in fleeing the scene, was captured a short time later.
