Cake decorating featured on show

Information on making bolster pillows, decorating cakes and embellishing paper mache boxes will be the featured topics on "Creative Living" 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and noon on Thursday. (All times are Mountain.)

Author, designer, and quilter, Meryl Ann Butler will show step-by-step instructions for using a 90-minute quilt technique to make quick 'n easy bolster pillows. She lives in Roanoke, Va.

Nancy Siler is going to show how to make a bold lacy chocolate cake that uses a chocolate version of the popular buttercream icing as well as malted milk balls for decoration. She is with Wilton Brands in Woodridge, Ill.

Barbara Trombley is President of Art Institute Glitter, Inc. in Cottonwood, Ariz., and she's going to show how to take a paper mache box and embellish it with various paints, glitter, beads and flowers.

Information on making beaded jewelry, making handbags, and preparing ice cream sandwiches will be the featured topics on "Creative Living" noon on Tuesday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. (All times are Mountain.)

Ellen Talbott and Liz Gourley, sisters and authors, will show how to make a beaded eye pin chain necklace, as well as show several other pieces of beaded jewelry they have made. Talbott lives in El Cajon, Calif. and Gourley is from Ventura, Calif.

Designer, author and sewing expert, Stephanie Kimura will show over 30 stylish handbags of every size and shape, made from leather, linen, silk, chiffon and even tapestry fabrics. Each is embellished in its own unique way to create designer bags with style. She's from Jensen Beach, Fla.

Nancy Siler, Wilton Enterprises, will show how to roll out cookie dough, cut with butterfly cookie cutters to make adorable ice cream sandwiches that can be decorated and enjoyed.

Roll-out butter cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp. almond extract
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. salt

Preheat oven to 400° F. In mixer bowl, cream butter with sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and extracts. Mix flour, baking powder and salt; add to butter mixture 1 cup at a time, mixing after each addition. Do not chill dough. Divide dough into 2 balls. On a floured surface, roll each ball into a circle approximately 12 inches in diameter and 1/8-inch thick. Dip cookie cutter in flour before each use. Bake cookies on ungreased cookie sheet 6-7 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned. Makes about 8 large cookies.
