Hounds turn back Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Junior quarterback Wes Wood ran for one touchdown and threw for two others — including the longest play from scrimmage for Eastern New Mexico University in four years — and the Greyhounds turned back Angelo State 23-21 Saturday night in Lone Star Conference football.

Sophomore placekicker Michael Cottingham, who missed a go-ahead, 34-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, kicked a 37-yarder with 1:11 in the third period for the lead. That proved to be the only scoring of the second half.

Wood completed 29-of-40 passes for 370 yards, throwing to 10 receivers. He scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak midway through the first quarter, then put the Hounds (2-3, 1-1 LSC) in front 14-7 with a 97-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Matthews with 3:05 left in the period after the Rams George Shamblen backed them up to the 3 with a coffin-corner punt.

The play was the longest since quarterback J.T. Thompson’s 99-yard run against East Cdentral on Sept. 15, 2007.

The Rams (3-2, 0-2) tied it afer recovering a fumble at the ENMU 35 on the first play of the second quarter. Quarterback Blake Hamblin found wide receiver Joey Knight for a 35-yard score on the next play.

After a 2-yard run by Tristan Carter gave the Rams the lead again, ENMU drove 77-yards in eight plays for a 2-yard scoring pass from Wood to Arvin Jackson. ENMU went for two points out of its “swinging gate” formation, but Chase Kyser’s pass was incomplete and the Rams led 21-20 at halftime.

The Hounds, who had given up around 260 yards rushing per game so far, held the Rams to 84 yards on 27 carries. Hambline went 22-for-36 for 307 yards through the air.

Wood also led the Hounds in rushing with 56 yards on 14 carries despite being sacked three times.

Safety Jayson Serda led the ENMU defense with 13 tackles, including six solo stops.

Wood also helped out with a 37-yard quick-kick punt that pinned ASU on its own 1 with under six minutes left.

The Rams marched to the ENMU 30, but defensive tackle Bracy McCoy blocked Jarred Martin’s 47-yard field goal attempt and the Hounds were able to run out most of the remaining time. Taylor Cannon’s 38-yard punt with seven seconds left went out-of-bounds at the Angelo 4, and the game ended on the next play.
