Living Desert State Park

• Location: Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park is on the northeast edge of Carlsbad off U.S.-285. It is 2 hours and 47 minutes or 171 miles from Portales. It is 200 miles or 3 hours and 20 minutes from Clovis.

• Directions: From Clovis take U.S. 70 W. toward Roswell for 105 miles. Stay straight on W. Relief Route for 15 miles. Take slight right onto SE Main St./U.S.-285 S. for 68 miles. Turn right onto Skyline Rd. for 1.7 miles and Skyline Rd. becomes Miehls Dr. and 1504 Miehls Dr. is on the left. From Portales take U.S. 70 to Roswell 85 miles and follow the directions above.

• What do they offer: Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park is an indoor/outdoor living museum which features 40 native animal species, hundreds of plants, self-guided tours, hiking, education programs, zoo camp, star parties and wildlife viewing.

• Special event: Outdoor classroom program curriculum guides for 3rd through 5th grades.

• Park fees: Adults $5; Children 7-12 $3; Children 6 and under free. Adult group rates (20 or more) per person $3; youth/School groups 50 cents; American Zoological Association members $2.50 adults, $1.50 children.
