Fishing report - Nov. 16

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, NOV. 16, 2010: NEW MEXICO FISHING REPORT

This fishing report, provided by the Department of Game and Fish and

thefishphone.com, has been generated from the best information available

from area officers, anglers, guides and local businesses. Conditions may

vary as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler

activities.

Southeast

Note: Stocking in Carlsbad area delayed until after water release to

Texas. Anticipate 3rd week of November if golden algae levels remain low.

Stocking at Lake Van is also suspended pending results from chemical tests

to control golden algae bloom or bloom subsides.

Black River - Flow is 12 cfs. The river was stocked with 200 triploid

rainbow trout last week. No report.

Bonito Creek – No report.

Rio Ruidoso - Flow is .02 cfs. The water is low and trout are slow to fair

with worms or salmon eggs.

Bonito Lake - Fishing is good using with Pistol Pete’s, spinners, spoons,

salmon eggs or Power Bait. Some nice sized fish being landed. The lake

closes for the season Nov. 30 and reopens next April.

Bottomless Lakes: Winter trout waters – Devils Ink Well was stocked with

499 triploid rainbow trout last week.

Brantley Reservoir – There has been light pressure. Catfish are reported

as fair at night with night crawlers. A mandatory catch and release is in

place at Brantley Lake from the dept. of Game and Fish. Pesticides, DDT’s

have been found in the fish, do not keep or eat them.

Grindstone Reservoir – Reservoir was stocked with 3000 triploid rainbow

trout last week. Fishing is reported as fair for trout using spinners,

Marshmallows, worms, Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Lake Van: Winter trout waters – No report.

Northeast

Cimarron River - The flows are 21 cfs below Eagle Nest Dam and 23 cfs near

Cimarron. Fishing continues to be good until water levels drop. Trout are

being taken on flies like dark stimulators, parachute Adam's, humpies and

various bead headed nymphs. Salmon eggs or worms are always a good bet for

the bait fishermen.

Costilla Creek – The flow is 10 cfs near the town of Costilla. Trout

fishing is reported as slow due to very low water levels.

Red River - Flows at Questa are 14 cfs, and 46 cfs below the hatchery.

Fishing is good for rainbows below the hatchery with bead head nymphs and

various flies. Bait fishermen might try spinners, salmon eggs or Power

Bait.

Rio Grande - Flows are 328 cfs near Cerro and 522 cfs below the Taos

Junction Bridge. Flows have jumped up this past week. Fishing is slow to

fair at Pilar. Trout are fair with bead head nymphs and streamers. Best

bet is to fish edges and eddies. Some pike have been taken on large

spinners and red and white whisters.

Rio Hondo – The water is low with flows at 11 cfs, lower section at

confluence with Rio Grande is where the only opportunities are until

spring. Trout are slow to fair with various flies, spinners and worms.

Rio Pueblo - Flow is 13 cfs and there is no report this week.

Cabresto Lake – Light pressure, water is low with the construction on the

dam.

Charette Lakes – The lake closes Oct. 31 and re-opens next March.

Clayton Lake – The lake closes Oct. 31 and re-opens next March.

Eagle Nest Lake – Fishing remains the same; trout are good trolling Platte

River Specials and other light tackle. Shore fishing and fishing from

boats anchored for rainbows is reported as fair with gold Cast Masters,

olive woolly buggers, Power Bait and worms. Kokanee snagging season

started as of Oct. 1 and will run till Dec. 31. Snagging for salmon is

reported as fair around the boat ramp, the south part of the lake and on

the Northeast side. Perch are good on worms.

Lake Alice and Lake Maloya – Both lakes were stocked, Lake Alice with 501

triploid rainbow trout and Lake Maloya with 3,000. Trout are reported as

good in both lakes using woolly buggers, Pistol Pete’s, dough baits and

Power Bait. Report of a 3 to 4 pound trout taken on an olive woolly

bugger.

Maxwell Lakes – The lakes close Oct. 31 and re-open next March.

Santa Cruz Lake – No report.

Shuree Ponds – No report. The ponds close Dec. 31 and re-open next July.

Springer Lakes – Water levels are low and there has been light pressure.

Northwest

Animas River - The flow is 328 cfs. Fishing is reported as slow with

little pressure.

Chama River - Upper section flow is 32 cfs, no report on the fishing

there. Below El Vado Dam, the flow is 144 cfs and the water is off color.

Fishing is good for browns averaging 14 -18 inches. One brown over 20

inches was landed on a Rapala. Anglers are having success using black and

gold Panther Martins or night crawlers. 11-14 inch rainbows are also

reported as good using Power Bait, night crawlers or salmon eggs. Wooly

buggers and bead headed nymphs are reported working for both species.

San Juan River - Upper section-Catch and Release flow is 481 cfs and

visibility is 2 and 1/2 feet. Fishing is good for rainbows and browns,

reports remain the same as last week. From Texas Hole up to the Cable,

fishing is very good in the mornings on #24-26 dark colored midge pupa and

larva, Some fish are eating cream colored ones also. Afternoons below

Texas Hole have been best gray or olive baetis emergers like a #22-24 foam

wing, RS2, or Johnny flash. The baetis are active from 11 am to about 5

pm. It's back to brown or black midge pupa/larva after 6:00.

Lower section – Open waters, fishing is good with night crawlers, salmon

eggs and the same flies as for the upper section.

Abiquiu Lake - Fishing is very slow. The Army Corps of Engineers have

switched over to winter staffing and all but a few primitive sites are

closed for the season. There was very little pressure and fishing is

reported as very slow.

El Vado Lake – Salmon snagging season continues but has slowed down

drastically and not much traffic since Heron Lake opened. Best success is

being reported on south side of lake. Kokanee snagging season started as

of Oct. 1 and will run till Dec. 31.

Heron Lake – Salmon snagging season opened this past weekend and will

remain open thru Dec 31. Snagging along the shore from Piedra Cove to the

east side of the dam was reported as on fire. Most anglers got their

limits. Shore fishing for trout is reported as good to excellent with roe

collected from salmon caught at El Vado Lake.
