This fishing report, provided by the Department of Game and Fish and thefishphone.com, has been generated from the best information available from area officers, anglers, guides and local businesses. Conditions may vary as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
Northeast
Cimarron River - The flows are 21 cfs below Eagle Nest Dam and 24 cfs near Cimarron. Fishing continues to be good with flies like dark stimulators, parachute Adam's, humpies and various bead headed nymphs. Salmon eggs or worms are always a good bet for the bait fishermen.
Costilla Creek – The flow is 10 cfs near the town of Costilla. Trout fishing is reported as slow due to very low water levels.
Red River - Flows at Questa are 18 cfs, and 48 cfs below the hatchery. Fishing is fair for rainbows up to 14 inches with bead head nymphs and various dry flies. Bait fishermen might try spinners, salmon eggs or Power Bait.
Rio Grande - Flows are 413 cfs near Cerro and 588 cfs below the Taos Junction Bridge. Flows have jumped up this past week. Fishing is fair to good at Pilar. The water is murky with visibility about 2 feet. Trout are fair to good with bead head nymphs, stonefly nymphs, caddis larva and white or olive streamers. Smallmouth bass are fair using streamers. Some pike have been taken on large spinners and red and white whisters.
Rio Hondo –The water is low but fishable with flows at 13 cfs, lower section at confluence with Rio Grande is fishing better than upper river. Trout are slow to fair with various flies, spinners and worms.
Rio Pueblo - Flow is 14 cfs and there is no report this week.
Cabresto Lake – Light pressure, water is low with the construction on the dam. There has been some success reported for small brook trout using various flies and lures.
Charette Lakes – The lake closed Oct. 31 and re-opens next March.
Clayton Lake – The lake closed Oct. 31 and re-opens next March.
Eagle Nest Lake – Trout are good trolling Platte River Specials. Shore fishing and fishing from boats anchored for rainbows is reported as fair with gold Cast Masters, olive woolly buggers, Power Bait and worms. Kokanee snagging season started Oct. 1 and will run through Dec. 31. Snagging for salmon is reported as fair around the boat ramp. Perch are good on worms.
Lake Alice and Lake Maloya – Trout are reported as good in both lakes, better at Maloya with woolly buggers, Pistol Petes, dough baits and Power Bait.
Maxwell Lakes – The lakes closed Oct. 31 and re-open next March.
Santa Cruz Lake – The water level is very low and fishing is poor from the bank. The boat ramp closed Sept. 25 because of low water.
Shuree Ponds – Fishing is reported as good from shore and from a float tube for trout averaging from 14 - 20 inches. Best success is reported with spinners and various bead headed nymphs. The ponds close Dec. 31 and re-open next July.
Springer Lakes – Water levels are low and there has been light pressure.
Southeast
Note : Stocking in Carlsbad area delayed until after water release to Texas. Anticipate 3rd week of November if golden algae levels remain low. Stocking at Lake Van is also suspended pending results from chemical tests to control golden algae bloom or bloom subsides.
Black River - Flow is 25 cfs. There is no fishing report.
Bonito Creek – No report.
Rio Ruidoso - Flow is .39 cfs. The water is low and trout are slow to fair with worms or salmon eggs.
Bonito Lake - Fishing is good using with Pistol Petes, spinners, spoons, salmon eggs or Power Bait. Lots of nice sized fish being landed. The lake closes for the season Nov. 30 and reopens next April.
Bottomless Lakes: Winter trout waters – No report.
Brantley Reservoir – There has been light pressure. Catfish are reported as fair at night with night crawlers. A mandatory catch and release is in place at Brantley Lake from the dept. of Game and Fish. Pesticides, DDT’s have been found in the fish, do not keep or eat them.
Grindstone Reservoir – Trout fishing remains to be good, limits reported taken with marshmallows and Power Bait. Also reported best near the dam on worms ,salmon eggs and Power Bait.
Lake Van: Winter trout waters – No report.
