Friday
• A Portales Police officer responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 1000 block of West 14th Lane.
When he arrived, an 18-year-old woman who lived there told him a 17-year-old boy had battered his 33-year-old wife. The couple lived at the house as well.
The officer handcuffed the 17-year-old and explained his rights. The boy said he was angry at his wife about money issues, punched her in the lip and put his hands on her neck but didn’t squeeze her neck. He said he didn’t mean to hurt her and loved her even though he had anger problems.
The 18-year-old said the 17-year-old pushed and hit his wife and strangled her on the bed in the bedroom. She said she believed the 33-year-old lost consciousness and stopped breathing because she saw the boy give her mouth-to-mouth respiration and the woman started to cough.
A 21-year-old woman who lived at the same residence also said the 17-year-old beat and strangled the 33-year-old. She said the 18-year-old tried without success to get the boy off of the 33-year-old.
Medical personnel arrived and treated the 33-year-old, who was conscious and had no visible marks of injury at that time. She was shaking and crying. She said she was afraid of the 17-year-old and he had battered her before.
She also said he had told her he would kill her if she tried to leave him.
The 33-year-old said she didn’t remember anything from the time the 17-year-old strangled her until the police arrived.
The officer transported the 17-year-old to the Portales Police Department, and another officer took the boy to the Quay County Juvenile Detention Center about 6:10 p.m.
