Texas Woman's blanks Zias

Neither coach was especially happy after Friday’s Lone Star Conference women’s soccer match.

Texas Woman’s Fleur Benetar was only slightly happier after the Pioneers scored just their sixth goal of the season to edge Eastern New Mexico University 1-0 at the ENMU pitch.

Zias coach Ray Nause, meantime, found little to like about the match.

“We’re just not very good,” Nause said after the Zias dropped to 3-6 (0-2 LSC). “We gave them a goal that was very poor defending on our part, and we didn’t take advantage of our chances.”

TWU (3-6, 1-1) broke through in the 71st minute when junior forward Rebekah Ledet punched in the rebound of Katy Black’s shot, which clanked off the goal post.

Benetar, whose team faces West Texas A&M on Sunday, was happy only in that her team won.

“Today, all that mattered was the result,” she said. “The second half was too close for comfort.”

Benetar opined that her team played reasonably well in the first half but “came out flat” in the second.

“It doesn’t feel like a win at this point,” she said. “In the second half, we were on our heels.”

Nause said it was a matter of being able to make plays at key moments.

“We aren’t a good enough team right now to (do that),” he said. “Most of the games will be pretty tight, so that’s why it’s so important who makes plays.”

He said the Zias were caught flat-footed on Ledet’s goal.

“It was just a long shot off the post,” he said. “We didn’t mark anybody, and it was an easy opportunity (on the rebound shot).”

ENMU hosts Texas A&M-Commerce in a noon LSC matchup on Sunday.
