NEW MEXICO FISHING REPORT

This fishing report, provided by the Department of Game and Fish and thefishphone.com, has been generated from the best information available from area officers, anglers, guides and local businesses. Conditions may vary as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Cimarron River - The flows are 43 cfs below Eagle Nest Dam and 42 cfs near Cimarron. Fishing is good with dry dropper set-ups or midge pupa during the day. Dry fly action is good with blue-wing olives, Parachute Adams or caddis in the evenings. Salmon eggs or worms are always a good bet for bait fishermen.

Costilla Creek – The flows are 66 cfs below the dam and 69 cfs near the town of Costilla. Trout are reported as good with caddis, blue-wing olives or Griffith gnats. In the lower river, black or silver copper johns are working well.

Red River - Flows at Questa are 27 cfs, and 48 cfs below the hatchery. Fishing is good for rainbows up to 20 inches with bead head nymphs, copper johns, red micro mayflies and a dry dropper rig with caddis and a trailing blue-wing olive emerger. Bait fishermen might try salmon eggs or Power Bait. 130 rainbows, averaging 17 inches, were stocked below Questa last week.

Rio Grande- Flows are 63 cfs near Cerro and 206 cfs below the Taos Junction Bridge. The water is murky with visibility about 3 feet. Trout are good in the mornings and evenings with bead head nymphs, stonefly nymphs, caddis larva and white or olive streamers. Smallmouth bass are good using streamers. No reports on other species.

Rio Hondo –The water is low but fishable. Trout are fair with hoppers, elk hair caddis or stimulators.

Rio Pueblo - Flow is 18 cfs and there is no report this week. 1,711 trout were stocked last week.

Cabresto Lake – Brook trout are reported as fair on worms.

Charette Lakes – Trout are fair from shore with Power Bait fished off the bottom. No reports on other species.

Clayton Lake –There has been light pressure and fishing is slow for all species. A few bass have been caught on rubber worms.

Eagle Nest Lake – Trout are good trolling Platte River Specials. Shore fishing for rainbows is reported as good with olive woolly buggers, midge pupa, callibaetis nymphs and Power Bait. Salmon are fair trolling at 25-35 feet with Christmas tree rigs. Snagging season for kokanee starts Oct. 1. Perch are good on worms.

Lake Alice and Lake Maloya– Trout are reported as good in both lakes with woolly buggers, Pistol Petes, dough baits and Power Bait. Last week 450 trout were stocked in Alice and 2,701 in Maloya.

Maxwell Lakes – There has been light pressure and an occasional large rainbow has been caught on Power Bait.

Santa Cruz Lake – The water level is very low and fishing is poor from the bank. The boat ramp closed on Sept. 25 because of low water.

Shuree Ponds – No fishing report.

Springer Lakes – There has been no pressure and no report.
