The long, long Lone Star Conference losing streak is over.
Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team snapped a 46-match losing streak in LSC/LSC South play dating back almost four years, thumping Texas A&M-Commerce 25-22, 25-16, 25-21 on Saturday at Greyhound Arena.
Junior middle blocker Jessica King had 13 kills as the Zias (6-5, 1-1 LSC) made relatively short work of the Lions (4-6, 0-2), finishing it off in an hour and 15 minutes. Senior setter Veronica Valdez-Kent added a double-double with 29 assists and 12 digs.
The last conference win for ENMU came in a South Division match at home against Angelo State on Oct. 26, 2006, in five sets. Since then, ENMU has beaten East Central in 2008 and Southwestern Oklahoma earlier this season, but those matches were not in conference play.
ENMU led virtually the entire first game, then erased a 10-4 deficit in the second set, finishing it off by scoring five of the final six points. The Zias broke a 2-2 tie with four consecutive points, including two kills by King, and held off a late charge by the Lions.
Lubbock Christian 1, ENMU 0 — Lubbock Christian’s Kaylyn Settle scored on a rebound with just over 10 minutes left and the unbeaten Lady Chaps edged Eastern New Mexico in women’s soccer at Lubbock.
ENMU goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas stopped a shot by LCU’s Peta Gaye-Soman off a corner kick, but the rebound came out to Settle and she punched in the wide-open shot from the left side.
Cardenas kept the match scoreless earlier in the half, making a save on Brannon. Settle got the rebound on that one for LCU (6-0), ranked 13th in the NAIA, but her shot bounced off the right post.
The Zias return to action at 4 p.m. Thursday against Texas-Permian Basin at the ENMU pitch.
