Hounds beat Wayland, improve to 4-1

PLAINVIEW, Texas — Sophomore forward Pablo Quintana scored a pair of goals and senior midfielder Edgar Bear had a goal and an assist Monday as Eastern New Mexico University beat Wayland Baptist 4-1 in a men’s soccer match.

The Greyhounds (4-1) opened a 3-1 halftime lead with three quick goals early in the first half, and iced it on Bear’s second goal of the season with less than two minutes left.

The Pioneers (2-2) struck first when Cesar Vallin punched in the rebound of a shot that bounced off an ENMU defender’s leg with just over seven minutes gone. Freshman defender Jehmaine Brooks scored his first goal of the season to tie it for ENMU, and Quintana added a pair of goals in short order.

ENMU begins Lone Star Conference play on Friday when it hosts rival West Texas A&M at the ENMU pitch.

Fort Lewis 2, ENMU women 1 — Hayley Hollenga’s second goal of the game, just over two minutes into the second overtime, gave 14th-ranked Fort Lewis a 2-1 victory over ENMU on Sunday in women’s soccer at the ENMU pitch.

Hollenga took a cross pass from Erika Shisler and scored in the 59th minute for the tying goal. Her game-winner for Fort Lewis (4-0) came on a breakaway from the right side.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sierra Cardenas made 10 saves for the Zias, including deflecting a shot by Elena Benevides off the crossbar and out of bounds to keep the match tied in the second half.

The Zias (1-3) jumped on top in the 31st minute when sophomore forward Brooke Serrano and fired a cross pass that freshman forward Sydney Tucker headed into the net for her second goal of the season.
