Day trip: Historic home tour offered

Place: The Harrington House

Location: 1600 S. Polk Street, Amarillo.

What is it? The historic landmark was home to philanthropists Don and Sybil Harrington. The Harrington’s home was donated as a tourist attraction in 1977.

What can people see here? Visitors get a tour of the 15,000 square foot home, which includes 20 rooms, eight bathrooms, and seven fireplaces on four levels. The house is a reflection of the Harrington’s lifestyle, their love of decorative and fine arts, and their appreciation for the original structure and grounds.

What age is it best suited for? All ages.

How much does it cost? Free to all ages. No food or drink is allowed inside, and you must arrive at least five minutes before your tour.

Hours of operation: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tours take about 50 minutes, and are limited to four people at a time.

Directions: Take U.S. 70 to Farwell, go east on U.S. 60 to Canyon. Go north on Interstate 27 into Amarillo, and merge onto I-40 west. Take exit 69B toward Washington Street/Amarillo College and merge onto the I-40 frontage road. Turn right on Madison Street, then the first right onto SW 17th Avenue. Turn left onto Polk Street. About two hours from base.
