Let peace rule in your heart

Life is full of wonderful treasures, and God blesses in so many ways. Things can be enjoyable, and we are grateful, but they really belong to God. We really don’t own anything when we are born into this life or when we leave it. Yet we can own a wealth of precious memories while here on earth.

I heard a cardiologist once said, “There are only two rules in life. Rule No. 1: Don’t get upset over little problems. Rule No. 2: Everything is a little problem.”

Loving with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself brings peace. Everything else is secondary.

The quest for materialism, over-motivated success workers and the mad scramble to “make it” cause many problems. Prioritizing and holding on tightly to that which is really important gives time to build precious memories.

Diamonds, cars, fur coats, larger houses, more profit-sharing investments … Is it worth it? Is it worth robbing loved ones of quality time that can never be recaptured? Is it worth the stress and worry? Please don’t get me wrong. I don’t believe in “redistributing wealth.” I’m talking about giving from the heart.

A realization that God owns this planet brings peace in everyday living. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:2 NIV).

I need to turn my worries over to Jesus. He is in control. Never mind the great material things. They don’t last anyway. To have the “peace that passes all understanding,” I need to learn many things that will enable me to have that peace. Here are a number of items I need to remember:

1. Count my blessings.

2. Pray without ceasing.

3. Be a giver, not a “getter.”

4. Endure trials patiently.

5. Don’t worry.

6. Live one day at a time.

7. Change criticism to praise.

8. Focus on God’s plan.

9. Let go and let God.

10. Give from my heart.

I need to start my day with Colossians 3:15: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful” (NIV).

St. Francis de Sales wrote this beautiful piece many years ago and it’s appropriate today:

“Be at peace. Do not look forward in fear to the changes of life; rather look to them with full hope as they arise. God, whose very own you are, will deliver you from out of them. He has kept you hitherto, and He will lead you safely through all things; and when you cannot stand it, God will bury you in His arms.

Do not fear what may happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of you then and every day. He will either shield you from suffering, or will give you unfailing strength to bear it.

Be at peace and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations.”

Let peace rule in your heart!
