Place: Fort McKavett State Historic Site.
Location: 7066 Farm Road 864 in Fort McKavett, Texas. The fort is 371 miles from Cannon Air Force Base, so a one-way drive is about six-and-a-half hours.
Available activities: Fort McKavett is a state historic site different from most military forts in west Texas. It was founded in 1852, while most were founded after the Civil War. The Government Springs is on a quarter-mile stretch on a nature trail from the visitor center at the fort. There is also a limestone quarry, where all the stones were cut for the buildings and the lime kiln. There are 15 standing buildings for people to look at on 80 acres of land.
What age group is it geared toward: For all ages.
Admission: $4 for adults and seniors. $3 for children ages 5 to 12 and college students with ID. Children 5 and under are free. Active duty military admission is free from Memorial Day to Sept. 6.
Other places of interest: The San Saba River is also nearby for fishing.
Hours of operation: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Closed on major holidays.
