ENMU junior qualifies for NCAA meet

Eastern New Mexico University junior Daniel Draper was accepted as one of 16 participants in the javelin throw during the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships.

It is the second-straight time, and third in four years, that the ENMU men’s team has sent a participant to the championships. This year’s events will be held May 27-29 at the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, N.C.

Draper, a native of Moriarty, threw a season-best 199-4.519 at the Arizona State University Sun Devil Open. It was the 15th-best mark in Division II, which accepted 16 competitors in the event.

Junior Tyler Drake of Pittsburg State is the top qualifier with a throw of 230-2.2, ahead of junior teammate Mike Beeler (223-10.6). The national record of 256-1 was set in 1996 by Kirt Thompson of Ashland College.

Draper is one of three Lone Star Conference athletes invited to the competition. he is joined by Raymond Orlando and Jacob McDonald of Angelo State and Eldon Grimslid of West Texas A&M.

Zach Gerleve represented ENMU in the 2007 national championships, placing 16th.
