Flying high: Annual Kite Karnival takes off Saturday

Kites will dot the sky during the seventh annual Kite Karnival Saturday at Doc Stewart Park.

Paul Hopkins, community center manager, said the event has been a success from the beginning and the community center looks forward to the event each year.

“It’s a fun event for Cannon (Air Force Base) and Clovis to have fun together,” Hopkins said. “It’s all about the kids and everyone getting out and enjoying the day.”

Hopkins said the event will include a kite making tent, games, vendors and kite flyers from the American Kite Association.

Hopkins said a group of kite flyers from Colorado will be flying 250 to 300-foot kites at the event after a few years of absence.

“Kites especially for this area are perfect for kids and families to come out and have a good time,” Hopkins said.

About 1,500 people attended the event last year, Hopkins said, and the community center is hoping for similar attendance.

The event is free and open to the public.

There will be free kites for children but supplies are limited.
