Portales students putting artistic talent on display

Portales students of all ages are showing off their artistic side Saturday.

Each school, kindergarten through 12th grade, is scheduled to participate in this weekend’s District Art Show. The come-and-go event is open to the public and includes refreshments and live entertainment by Portales students.

“The art show is an opportunity for students to express themselves in creative ways,” said organizer Franklin Smith. “It gives them an outlet and lets them be themselves.”

Smith anticipates more than 100 students exhibiting work and said the show isn’t judged.

“It’s just an opportunity for students to get their art out there,” he said.

Portales High School sophomore Braden Tucker expects to display artwork in the show. He said he thought it was good for getting his art out in the public eye because he wanted a career in the field, and he hoped someone might buy his work.

Valencia Elementary School Principal Michael Terry said teachers choose the best art from different projects throughout the year. One or two pieces will be picked in each category, according to Terry.

Different materials have been used to create many art projects.

“I think it’s a great way for us to share the accomplishments of the students and to share it with the community,” Terry said of the show.

Debbie Vinson, second-grade teacher at James Elementary School, said she has watched the children in art.

“They love the freedom to express their creative side, which they don’t always get to do,” she said.

Vinson said the students are also proud of their art work.
