Joint Land Use Committee seeks public's input

Freedom New Mexico

The first public meeting Thursday in the Joint Land Use Study process for Cannon Air Force Base and Curry and Roosevelt counties provided a timeline for the study and encouraged public participation.

Project Manager Catherine Roupe of Colorado company HDR Inc., which is working on the study under contract with Curry County, said public input is important for the process.

“We don’t know it all, and we know that, so we want to get them involved,” she said.

Roupe also said residents should participate because they and their families would live under the plan.

The study’s Policy Committee will have public meetings from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. on the third Monday of every month at different locations, she said. Another public meeting is planned for June, and Roupe hopes to have a draft study ready by July.

After a 30-day comment period, a meeting for input on the draft will be held in August, she said. In September, HDR will present the plan to the Curry County Commission.

Roupe expects to publish the final plan in October, although she could extend the comment period if more input was expected.

Meeting and committee member information will become available on the study Web site once it’s up and running, she said.
