Portales corn grower Craig Breshears has been named a state winner in the 2009 National Corn Yield Contest, sponsored by the National Corn Growers Association.

Breshears placed first in the state in the “A No Till/Strip Till Non-Irrigated” class with a yield of almost 39 bushels per acre, according to a news release from the association. He was the only grower in his class to enter and complete paperwork, said Kyle Fergason of the association.

Fergason said 21 New Mexico farmers in various classes entered the contest this year.
