Hounds, ACU look to play tripleheader

Freedom New Mexico

ABILENE, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University baseball team is in for a long day today at Abilene Christian — the teams will try to complete a four-game Lone Star Conference series with a tripleheader.

The teams are scheduled to play 25 innings. Saturday’s game, postponed by rain, will start at 9 a.m. (MDT) with Sunday’s scheduled doubleheader — seven innings in the first game, nine in the second — to follow.

ENMU (14-12, 12-9 LSC) won Friday’s seven-inning series opener 4-3, scoring twice in the top of the seventh. The teams then tried to start a second game, but got through only three batters — the Greyhounds had a runner at third with two out in the top of the first, which is where the game will resume today.

ACU (19-7, 11-6) is ranked 11th in NCAA Division II, but the Wildcats have lost five of their last seven.

Other area events scheduled for Saturday which were postponed included Portales High’s baseball and softball teams playing at West Las Vegas.

The baseball team was scheduled to play the Dons in a doubleheader, while the softball squad, which edged Las Vegas Robertson 5-4 on Friday, had games scheduled against Raton and West Las Vegas.

The baseball games have been rescheduled for April 13, tentatively starting at 3 p.m., Rams coach Arturo Ontiveros said. Meantime, softball coach Robbie Crowley said those games will be rescheduled if the teams can find a common time.

Ontiveros said the Rams’ baseball staff is sponsoring a baseball camp for grades 3-7 from 10-1 a.m. Thursday at Ram Field. The cost is $35 and includes a camp T-shirt.
