My turn: Preferring a pinch of green

I’m thinking green today. It’s not payday, but St. Patty’s Day, that time of year when we pay homage to a fifth century saint by drinking green beer and slurping lime Jell-O shots.

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was known to use the shamrock to explain The Holy Trinity, with each leaf representing the father, son and Holy Spirit.

So, naturally, today, the shamrock has come to be associated with … a gas company.

People go green on St. Patty’s day, dying their hair or dressing like leprechauns. In Chicago, they dye the Chicago River green, and around here, fast food outlets sell green tacos. I’m into nature and I’m semi-conscious of global warming, however, my idea of “going green” is sprinkling a little bit of cilantro in my menudo.

Green is not my color. I like to tease people on St. Patty’s Day. Instead of wearing my bright fluorescent green blouse ensemble, with an equally bright skirt of green and aqua colors — looks kind of like a mermaid getup — I wear my plaid capris that have thin green lines embedded between other colors.

On many occasions, people have tried to go for the pinch, only for me to point out my barely noticeable traces of green just in time.
