Jail security 101: Guards must watch inmates

 


Yes, by now most residents know the Curry County jail has structural problems that should have been resolved before it was built in 1993.

Yes, by now we know how difficult it is to find trained, experienced correctional officers to work there, and stay longer than a few months.

Yes, by now we are not surprised to hear former jail employees complain they were micromanaged. That finger-pointing lament’s not new either.

However, none of those issues, separately or together, can explain:

• the Aug. 24, 2008, escape of eight violent prisoners.
