Hounds split at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Catcher Matt Lenderman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs Friday night and Angelo State defeated Eastern New Mexico University 8-3 for a split of their Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader.

The Greyhounds took the opener 9-5 as right fielder Ethan Wagner went 4-for-4 with three RBIs. The teams wrap up their four-game series with a noon (MST) twin bill today.

The Rams (15-12, 9-9 LSC) pounded out 12 hits off six ENMU pitchers in the nightcap. Starter Doug McIntyre (1-3) took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings.

Lenderman hit a two-run single in Angelo’s three-run fifth which opened a 6-1 lead. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the third and a run-scoring single in the eighth.

Phillip Clinard (2-2) earned the win for the Rams, allowing six hits and an unearned run over five innings. Designated hitter Mitch Wolfe was 3-for-4 for ENMU (12-11, 10-8), while first baseman Sean Cruce and center fielder Luis Quinones each had a pair of hits.

Senior right-hander Jerry Manning (4-0) labored through a complete game for ENMU in the seven-inning opener, working around 12 hits, four walks and two hit batsmen. ENMU’s defense played errorless ball behind Manning and supported him with three double plays.

Wagner hit a two-run double to cap a three-run first, then tied the game 5-5 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth. In the sixth, ENMU took the lead with three unearned runs off Angelo State starter Adam Miller (1-1).

Third baseman Chris Eaton drove in a pair of runs for ENMU with a first-inning single and a third-inning sacrifice fly while left fielder Jereme Johnson singled twice and walked twice in four at-bats, scoring three runs and stealing a base.
