Hounds roll over Mustangs 16-1

Freedom New Mexico

HOBBS — Mitch Wolfe and Garrett Cook hit their first home runs of the season and seven Eastern New Mexico University pitchers combined on a two-hitter Tuesday as the Greyhounds clobbered University of the Southwest 15-1 in a non-league tilt at Hobbs.

ENMU (11-10) pounded out a season-high 19 hits in winning its first matchup against the Mustangs (4-10) since 2002. The Hounds have a 16-5-1 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1993.

Wolfe’s solo homer with one out in the fourth inning broke a scoreless tie. The Hounds added two in the fifth on a single by Luis Quinones, an RBI triple by Cook and a sacrifice fly by Jereme Johnson.

In the seventh, ENMU took advantage of four Mustangs errors to score eight unearned runs, capped by Cook’s two-run homer. Kevin Thompson and Quinones each had run-scoring singles in the inning.

The Mustangs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh, but Quinones’ two-run single keyed a four-run eighth for the Hounds to finish out the scoring.

USW’s only hits were a fourth-inning double by Oscar Roman and a seventh-inning single by pinch-hitter Steven Viscaino.

Jerry Manning (3-0) picked up the win with two innings of relief. Cook and Quinones finished 3-for-5 for ENMU, while Sean Cruce was 3-for-6 and Wolfe, Thompson and catcher Mike Medina each chipped in a pair of hits.

The Hounds return to Lone Star Conference play with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday at Angelo State. Their next home game is a 4 p.m. outing on Monday against Texas-Permian Basin.
