By summer, Plains Regional Medical Center hopes to have its new surgery and medical office building fully functioning.
The facility south of the hospital will be the new home to outpatient surgeries and six of PRMC’s specialist physicians.
PRMC offered tours Wednesday during a dedication ceremony.
Administrator Hoyt Skabelund said day surgeries are already being performed in the center. However the hospital is seeking licensing to house physicians, a process it hopes complete by summer.
Surgeries, which fall under different licensing requirements, have been performed at the facility since October, he said.
The facility offers laboratory services, x-rays, office appointments with physicians who specialize in surgery related disciplines and surgeries can be completed in the surgery center that occupies one-third of the building.
Skabelund said it will help streamline services to patients, giving them a convenient, one-stop location as opposed to navigating the hospital.
“It’s another convenient site for outpatient services,” he said. “Patients can park, walk in, register, have their labs pulled and be gone.”
Skabelund said the facility offers state-of-the-art equipment with rooms equipped to conduct general surgery, and procedures related to obstetrics/gynecology, internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology and podiatry.
“Everything that can be done in a day can be done here,” said Monta Cochran, a registered nurse during a tour of the pre-operation rooms.
The $14 million, 13,000 square-foot surgery facility located at 2421 W. 21st Street, was built in 2006 by a group of eight local surgeons who wanted a facility in which they could perform day-surgeries.
The list of physicians who will move their offices to the building when licensing is obtained are; General Surgeons Victor Davis, MD, Frederick Hammill, MD and Manoel Rodamilans, MD; Orthopedic Surgeon Jacob George, MD; Urologist Edward Pienkos, MD and Podiatrist Richard Stamm, DPM.
