Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Program connects personnel, families

The Clovis/Curry County and the Roosevelt County chambers of commerce are teaming up with Cannon Air Force Base personnel to kick off a new program today — “Adopt an Air Commando.”

Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce said the program is a cooperative effort between Clovis, Portales and Cannon leadership in figuring out ways to connect new personnel at Cannon to local families.

“(It’s) just so they can try to have someone that can help them with basic (local) information or things to do,” Kos said.

Base officials will pass information about the program to airmen — and their families, if applicable — and the chambers will be responsible for recruiting families interested in “adoption.”

Kos said the intent is to match airmen and local residents who have similar interests, such as hiking, outdoor sports, hunting or even church activities.

Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Director Sharon King said Clovis has so far produced more potential host families, but thinks the program has promise.

“I think folks are really going to enjoy it both from the military side and from the community side,” King said. “There are a couple of groups that have, of course, expressed some interest in being more involved in Cannon affairs. I think it would be nice to bring them in on this, and they are really excited.”
