Letter to the Editor: Constitution support manipulative

Constitution support manipulative

I am concerned about the manipulative and deceitful nature of the resolution presented Curry County commissioners on Tuesday.

There is no doubt the Commission and residents of Curry County support the entire Constitution, not just emphatically and specifically a few amendments.

The resolution asked commissioners to affirm the obvious. It also asked them to affirm the myth that the current administration is coming after our guns and freedom of speech.

It was a carefully crafted resolution using emotionally charged slogans and catch phrases associated with values and beliefs deeply held by all of us, such as honor, love of country and desire for freedom. It is political suicide to vote against it. Therein lies the manipulation.

Subtly hidden within the fourth and fifth “whereas” was the propagation of fear.

“Currently under consideration … through regulation, taxation or restriction … alter the fundamental rights …. tools given to protect themselves from an abusive and oppressive government …”

It attempted to manufacture public consent that this myth and fears are valid.

Did a small vocal group use the most treasured and revered documents of the United States to manipulate a vote both in support of the Constitution and at the same time fear mongering?

This was a fluff-filled feel-good resolution designed to instill fear of the government through nebulous claims of rights being taken away. It was an attempt to manufacture public opinion, create controversy where there is none and stir emotion based on presentation, not logic.

John Kennedy said it best: “The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie — deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”
