UT-Permian Basin blanks Hounds

ODESSA, Texas — Marcelo Andres scored on a rebound shot midway through the first half and Texas-Permian Basin went on to a 2-0 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in men’s soccer on Tuesday.

Junior goalkeeper Josh Bussen stopped the initial shot by the Falcon’s Brandon Pepper, but Andres converted the deflection to break the scoring ice at the 24:22 mark of the opening half.

Permian Basin (1-2), which had not scored in losing to Schriner (1-0) and West Texas A&M (2-0), added an insurance goal when Andres assisted Shelby Sharp, who beat Bussen from about 10 yards out with just over 24 minutes left in the match.

The Falcons outshot ENMU 11-9, but the Greyhounds had a 6-4 edge in shots in the second half. Permian Basin’s Chris Benavides was credited with five saves in the shutout, while Bussen had four.

ENMU, which won its opener on Friday at College of the Southwest 4-0, lost for just the second time in six matches all-time against the Falcons (3-2-1).

The Hounds are on the road again this weekend, playing Colorado Christian on Friday and Regis on Sunday in matches scheduled for Denver.
