Sept. 3, 1964

The Portales News-Tribune reported that the pet prairie dog Portales Police had in "the pokey" the day before was bailed out by Mr. and Mrs. C.A. McEndree of University Drive. They said it belongs to their granddaughter-in-law, Mrs. Larry Hays, also of University Drive. Mrs. Hays is the former Mary Nell Ainsworth of Milnesand, and her father, Nelson Ainsworth, caught the prairie dog when it was tiny and tamed it. Its name was Hector, and it was fond of people and had forgotten it was a prairie dog, according to the News-Tribune.
