Portales Women’s Club
Portales Women’s Club met on April 8, and First Vice President Della Kobernick called the meeting to order in the absence of the president.
The Collect was led by Jan Smartnick, the pledges were led by Wanda Pettus, and June Ferguson gave the invocation.
The minutes from the March meeting were approved as written. The treasurer reported $7257.86 in the account.
A sign-up sheet for the “Great American Cleanup” at 9:30 a.m. April 18 at City Park was distributed.
Members were reminded to bring thank-you cards for residents at the children’s homes in Portales, and to bring toiletries for the Hartley House.
Patrice Tompkins reported on Woman’s Day Out and thanked everyone who helped.
The following officers were elected: President Della Kobernick, First Vice President Heidi Foshee, Second Vice President Amie Franz,
Third Vice President Patrice Tompkins, Recording Secretary Sharon King, Corresponding Secretary Anne McMath and Treasurer Gertie Swager.
Jane Hilliard introduced the hostess committee: Dianne Parker, Della Kobernick, Patrice and Gabby Tompkins, and Anne McMath.
Betsy Chavez introduced Sodexho General Manager Tony Allen, who demonstrated carving a variety of fruits and vegetables. The next meeting will be the Installation Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. May 13.
Golden Acres
Golden Acres residents held their monthly meeting April 6. President Truett Bagwell called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag was recited, followed by singing “God Bless America.” After the business meeting, F.B. Willis offered thanks for the food. Brisket was furnished by Monarch. Following the meal, a drawing was held for Easter baskets, one each for men and women. Mrs. Bates and Mr. Tivis were the winners of the two baskets. All residents and guests received an Easter chicken made by some of the residents. Those were made out of light bulbs. The meeting and luncheon were adjourned at 1 p.m. Easter chickens that were not claimed were distributed to the hospital patients by Lyndia Hill.
Altrusa International Inc.
Altrusa International Inc. of Portales met on Monday at Eastern New Mexico University in the Campus Union Building Sandia Room.
President Vaunceil Turnbough presided over the business meeting and conducted the opening ceremonies.
The minutes from the previous meeting were approved as corrected. Sue Brackseick gave the Altrusa Accent.
The president recognized members who had contributed to recent projects or helped in other ways. Scholarship Chairwoman Rosalie
Richards reported that Jenny Wilson of Floyd High School and Shelly Ellis of Portales High School had been awarded $400 scholarships from the Altrusa club.
Candy Howl was elected third delegate to represent the club at the District 10 Conference in Albuquerque.
Following the business meeting, members revealed secret pals and drew for names for the coming year.
The next meeting will be on April 27, and new members will be initiated.
The final meeting of the club year will be on May 11 with the installation of new officers.
