CANYON, Texas — First baseman Kaitlyn Witte hit a three-run, go-ahead homer, helping spoil a record-setting Friday night for Kristen Cruickshank in West Texas A&M’s 6-3 win over Eastern New Mexico University in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader.
Kim Lecomte hit a two-run homer to invoke an eight-run mercy rule in the opener, a 10-1 win for the host Lady Buffs in the Lone Star Conference matchup.
Cruickshank, playing first base in the nightcap, hit a three-run homer to left field in the first inning to give her 14 on the year, breaking Tina Whitt’s single season mark set in 2006.
But the Lady Buffs (32-17, 10-8 Lone Star Conference South) responded with a two-out, two-run single by Erin Hartigan in the second inning.
Shelbey Cockrell tossed a seven-hitter for West Texas A&M, with three strikeouts.
Kim Crouse took the loss in the opener, and Cruickshank in the nightcap for ENMU (20-20, 2-12), which stays in Canyon Saturday for a single game at noon (MST).
The Lady Buffs never trailed in the opener, capitalizing on an error, two walks and an illegal pitch in the first inning.
Melissa Williams hit a solo homer for the Zias’ only run.
