Greyhounds earn series split

Freedom New Mexico

Designated hitter Jereme Johnson’s walkoff single capped a three-run seventh inning to help Eastern New Mexico University claim an 11-10 comeback win over Abilene Christian on Sunday at Greyhound Field.

The win earned the Greyhounds a split with the conference-leading Wildcats, which grabbed a 7-6 win in the nightcap. The teams split the weekend series 2-2 and the Greyhounds (19-16, 14-14 Lone Star Conference) moved to 9-3 in one-run games this season. The Hounds are in fifth place in the 12-team conference.

First baseman Seth Clabaugh tied the score in the seventh with a two-run homer to left center off Brad Rutherford, and catcher Freddy Carmona followed up with a single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Clayton Young, and two batters later, Johnson singled to left off Rutherford to finish the comeback.

The Wildcats (28-10, 21-7) regrouped after a six-run Greyhound second, posting all 10 of their runs over the next three innings, including a solo homer in the fifth by left-fielder Travis Latz.

Jerry Manning (4-1) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless seventh for the Greyhounds.

Trailing 6-3, the Wildcats got an RBI single up to left by second baseman Steve Camiliucci and an RBI groundout from center-fielder Trevor Bumpass in the eighth.

Abilene Christian completed the comeback in the ninth against Manning (4-2) with a single up the middle by first baseman Brett Bochsler and a sacrifice fly by Camiliucci.

Bochsler ended the Greyhound comeback attempt in the ninth with an unassisted double play, as he snagged a line-drive by Garrett Cook and doubled off pinch runner Juan Sanchez at first.

Rutherford (5-3) picked up the win in relief with two scoreless innings of work.

The Greyhounds are on the road Tuesday for a 2 p.m. nine-inning game at New Mexico Highlands University.
