Curry County jail camera system being modified

Installation of a new camera system at the Curry County jail is expected to begin in the next couple of weeks.

Curry County commissioners approved a $181,000 contract at Thursday’s special meeting.

The new system will allow staff to pan and zoom high-resolution cameras and recordings will be backed up for 30 days, County Manager Lance Pyle said.

The system will merge 39 new cameras and 24 existing cameras.

The contract does not include the Juvenile Detention Center as previously planned, Pyle said.

Following the Aug. 24 escape of eight inmates from the facility, the poor recording quality, minimal storage times and lacking coverage of the existing camera system became a high profile issue.
