School music groups to perform at concert

Freedom New Mexico

Musical groups from six Clovis Municipal Schools perform today at the Music in Our Schools Week Grand Concert.

The concert is at 6:30 p.m. in Marshall Auditorium.

Clovis Elementary Schools’ Ambassador Choir, Freshman Campus Chorale, Clovis High School Chorale, Jazz Band I, Marshall Middle School Band and Clovis High School Symphony Band will take the stage in turn.

Music in Our Schools Week is part of the National Association for Music Education, which has worked to ensure that every student has access to a well-balanced, comprehensive, and high-quality program of music instruction taught by qualified teachers since 1907.

Wayne Anderson, music coordinator for Clovis schools, said the students have been practicing for this performance since the beginning of January.

“This concert is intended to bring recognition and exposure for the citywide music program,” he said.

Anderson said there are 100 reasons why music is important for students.

“It helps their self-confidence. For a lot of students, it gives them a sense of belonging to a group that they may not have in other circumstances,” he said.

Anderson said the high standards expected in music often encourage a student to apply that standard to other areas in their life, including school work.
