City council to discuss airport grant

At their regular city council meeting on Tuesday, Portales city officials will discuss the approval of a New Mexico Department of Transportation aviation division grant for airport facility improvements.

Portales City Manager Debi Lee said the annual grant is set aside for basic airport maintenance.

Other scheduled business in the meeting includes the approval of mid-year budget adjustments for fiscal year 2008-2009, as well as a resolution to authorize the mayor to execute an agreement with the national museum of the U.S. Air Force for the F-111 static display.

The city of Portales must pay insurance for the display and the agreement with the Air Force to keep the plane must be renewed every year, she said.

“They’ve actually gutted it. But we have to insure it as if it were operational,” Lee said. “It’s a real icon for the community and we have a great relationship with Cannon Air Force Base.”

Water valve installation will also be discussed.
