Hounds lose overtime thriller to Mustangs

Freedom New Mexico

Guard Nolan Richardson hit back-to-back baskets in overtime to give Midwestern State the lead for good and the Mustangs held off Eastern New Mexico 94-90 in a Lone Star Conference South Division men’s game Saturday night at Greyhound Arena.

Richardson, the LSC’s leading scorer and the grandson of former Tulsa and Arkansas head coach Nolan Richardson, poured in 26 points for the Mustangs. Midwestern State (18-6, 7-2 South) also got 16 points from Anthony Moore and 14 from Trajinski Grigsby, both off the bench.

ENMU (4-20, 0-9), which suffered its 11th loss in a row, put six players in double figures led by 6-foot-8 sophomore Tommy York with 17 points and junior post Dannon Wafer with 17 points apiece.

Brandon Wilson scored 16 points, Jimmie Marshall added 14 points, Equas Darby had 12 and Aaron King 10 for ENMU, which shot 56 percent from the floor (30-of-54) but went 0-for-8 from 3-point range.

The Greyhounds stayed close, though, by sinking 30-of-36 free throws, including 10-of-11 by Marshall.

ENMU trailed 81-76 when King hit a layup with 1:31 left. Wafer then went 1-of-2 from the line before Marshall’s steal led to a game-tying tip-in by King with 15 seconds left in regulation.

Richardson had a chance to win it as time expired, but his jump shot was off the mark.

The Mustangs, who came in tied for the South lead with Texas A&M-Kingsville, shot 53 percent from the field on 34-of-64.
