An Air Force Special Operations MQ-1 Predator assigned to Cannon Air Force Base crashed Sunday in Afghanistan, according to an Air Force Times report.
The unmanned plane, assigned to the 3rd Special Operations Squadron at Cannon Air Force Base was lost over southern Afghanistan about 11:35 a.m. local time.
The cause of the crash was attributed to engine problems, according to Air Force reports.
Cannon Public Affairs Chief Capt. Mae-Li Allison said she could not confirm if the aircraft was assigned to the 3rd Special Operations Squadron.
The Air Force reports the MQ-1 Predator is a medium-altitude, long-endurance, unmanned aircraft system.
The MQ-1's primary mission is interdiction and conducting armed reconnaissance against critical, perishable targets.
When the MQ-1 is not actively pursuing its primary mission, it acts as the Joint Forces Air Component Commander-owned theater asset for reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition in support of the Joint Forces commander.
